Healthy meal you can make at home

Having a healthy home cooked meal! What would a restaurant chef would do?

Cook first, snack later as a chef would often do. We often went to the grocery store with impulses to buy and fill our fridges with stuffs because we ran out of the food and only to buy stuffs that didn’t really go into the fridge. For those who are guilty, you know what we meant. Those bags of potato chips, cookies and snacks that goes on the pantry and leaving the fridge empty still. Don’t get us wrong, snacks have their places like in some beach parties, long road trips, watching movies, our healthy quick bites snack recipe and etc. But they don’t have to ruin our appetites for a good meal. 

Meal or should we say MENU Planning

Imagine you are a chef running a restaurant and your task is to get all the raw food supplies to cook for your customers for a week. Of course, you will need to come up with a menu (meal plan) and order accordingly. If your restaurant is serving your customers wholesome meals that your grandmother would cook from scratch, you probably won’t have any cookies and snacks to order from your restaurant suppliers. In most cases, those are the chores of your restaurant’s baker.  So why not going to the grocery store as if you are buying for your restaurant. What you want your customers (your kids and spouse) to eat? Taking this role, you will be in control of what to buy that would make sense for you and your family. 

Better Ingredients

Remember you are still a restaurant chef and you wanted the best for your customers so spare no expense on getting the best ingredients to make your dishes. As the saying goes “Better ingredient makes better …..” you get the point. Shouldn’t your fridge be the treasure box of your selected wholesome goodies , have a plan and be selective. Believe us, this is the area, been selective is good because you are in a mission to cook for the best. You see, the game plan has changed, you are no longer just going to the store buying whatever flashes your eyes, you are going in to fill your ORDER. You will need visions, you will need tools because you are going to planning a meal and to generate a healthy grocery list. Together, you are going to run a successful restaurant for your customers (your family).

Healthy diet is a balancing act; choose between the five food groups: vegetables, fruit, grain, meat, and milk products.

Most of us need nutrition from all sort of food groups so we can get all the necessary vitamins and nutrients that we need. With grocery, we just selecting from what source and the type of food to get them. This would help us create habits to build a better lifestyle as well as making us becoming a better chefs or consumers 

Know your body

What makes healthy choice, start by knowing what your body needs, for some people with chronic conditions such as GERD or heart burns, they would take certain types of food to avoid them and still having healthy diets.

Healthy for our wallet; less waste and more deals!

Many time when we go on a health conscious grocery trips, we would tend to buy healthy leafy greens (organic or not), vegetables and fruits, but only to see them rotten few days later without been eaten. All the while just making the grocery store richer and you poorer! What a waste, without a proper meal/menu planning, grocery list to back up your meal preparation habits, these gallant attempts would all be in vain. Cooking and meal preparation takes time and dedication. A determination to eat healthy has to be proactive. Not only that, you may check up your local grocery stores or restaurants from time to time to see if they have deals that you just can’t miss (stock up if you can). All to help you shave off some of that fat around your hard earned dollars so that they can carry you further in your budget.    

The Grocery Game (real gems)

Once you have both health departments (healthy diet and your wallet) working at the same time, Grocery shopping is just a game to dig out the gems along the way. It is as if you are a treasure hunter seeking to find the gems in some temple like Indiana Jones movies. Many time, when we go grocery shopping, we are attracted by a certain quality of the store that we can’t quite put our fingers on, but we go there almost every time. That is because the store has what you want and you are feeling right at home when you went. That is the kind of relationships we are nurturing here and cherished.
